Access-Ability Summer Showcase 2025: Darzal Games

For the Access-Ability Summer Showcase of 2025, the Darzal Games co-founder Darzington joined to highlight two of the team's games featuring hefty accessibility features for those in need. In their video, they showed off their games, including which sorts of features you can expect in each one.

Darzington shares their struggles suffering with chronic pain, which gets in the way of their hobbies in both videogame development and playing. Due to this, Darzal Games makes a note to ensure that the team's games are always accessible to those who might struggle with similar issues.

First, we get to learn a bit about the core accessibility options offered in Darzal Games' cores. These are features that the team seeks to add to all of their titles, including the two that have already been launched:

  • No time pressure
  • Mouse, keyboard, or controller options to let the gamer decide their preferred input method
  • No long holds for buttons or combos
  • Controller remapping utilising Steam's integrated overlay
  • All built-in for one-handed play

Then, Darzington moved on to talk a bit about the first game, Quest Giver, a title where you play as an NPC with the role of giving out quests to adventurers. As your boss tries to desperately find a reason to fire you, and players are less than patient, it'll be your job to findwhich is the right quest for who, essentially working as a management visual novel.

Being a text-heavy title, the two main features added to Quest Giver are an accessible font (which you can select from the stylised, pixelated one incorporated into the game), and instant chat boxes to reduce movement. This should give players the opportunity to focus on the narrative and getting fired, getting assassinated, ending the world, falling in love, joining a cult, starting a mutiny, getting seduced by a demon...

...where were we?

6-Sided Stories, instead, is a hexagonal puzzle title where you'll need to complete the jigsaw-like puzzle, but instead of dragging and dropping items, you click the tiles to tilt them around and complete the image. As a puzzler, the title focuses solely on completing the image, omitting text; meanwhile, the colours used for the puzzles kept in mind colourblind individuals, using distinct shades and hues that should offer opportunities for anyone to pick it up. Finally, you can take advantage of two hint systems: seeing the completed image to know how to complete it and the incorrect pieces jiggling to give you an idea of what's missing and needs moving.

Quest Giver is out now as of the 1st of December 2023, whereas 6-Sided Stories is out as of the 20th of November 2024, both for £4.29.
